Veterans from around South Florida dropped lines in Graham Dairy Lake in a contest sponsored by Fishing with America’s Finest, the Town of Miami Lakes and its Veterans Committee.
The activities provided on April 2 by the Fishing with America’s Finest organization were free for all veterans. Gear including reels, poles and bait were provided as was lunch, Snow Cones and popcorn.
Largemouth bass and other hooked fish were measured and released back into the water.
Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid; Miami-Dade County District 13 Commissioner Rene Garcia, R-Hialeah; Fla. Rep. Alex Rizo, R-Hialeah and members of American Legion Post 144 were among those who also observed Vietnam War Veterans Day, which is on March 29, 1973.
Former President Barack Obama proclaimed Vietnam War Veterans Day in 2012. It marks the day 50 years ago when the last American troops left that country.
Garcia gave a glass sailboat to Capt. Neal Stark, of Davie and founder of Fishing with America’s Finest, to honor his work with veterans in the area.
